L'Association Africaine d'Economie et Politique de la Santé (AfHEA) prévoit de tenir sa 6e Conférence en Mars 2022 avec l'approbation du Conseil d'Administration. Les 5 dernières conférences ont eu lieu au Ghana (2009), au Sénégal (2011), au Kenya (2014), au Maroc (2016) et enfin au Ghana (2019).

AfHEA appoints Naomi Setshegetso as Executive Committee Member

AfHEA appoints Dr Naomi Setshegetso as Executive Committee Member responsible for Business Development

The Executive Committee of AfHEA has appointed Dr. Naomi Setshegetso as the Deputy Executive Director with responsibility for overseeing Business Development. Dr. Setshegetso will be taking up the role in place of Ms. Grace Njeri (the AfHEA Secretary) who had been acting as the Deputy Director in charge of Institutional Development. Dr. Naomi is switching roles with Mr. Pascal Ndiaye (who had previously been the Deputy Director for Business Development).

AfHEA facilitates Nigeria’s NHIS visit to Ghana to understudy Ghana’s NHIS

The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) of Nigeria as part of its ongoing reform dubbed “Health Insurance Under One Roof” expressed interest in visiting Ghana to understudy Ghana’s Health Insurance to feed into their reforms’ efforts. In fulfilment of one of AfHEA’s core objectives of providing technical support to African countries to facilitate evidence-based decisions, AfHEA facilitated and coordinated this study visit by NHIS Nigeria.

Prof Justice Novignon and Prof. John Ataguba join AU’s ALM tracker subcommittee

The African Union Commission in moving forward with the African Leadership Meeting (ALM) Declaration invited AfHEA to join the sub-committee on tracker in February 2020. The Tracker sub-committee was identified as an important source of expertise for the ALM Declaration implementation. The AfHEA representatives on the Tracker sub-committee are Prof. Justice Nonvignon, an Associate Professor at the School of Public Health, University of Ghana and Prof John Ataguba an Associate Professor and Director of the Health Economics Unit, University of Cape Town.

AfHEA partners with John Hopkins University (JHU) and the international Decisions Support Initiative (iDSI) on Teaching Health Economics in sub-Saharan Africa

During the 2019 AfHEA conference that took place in Accra, Ghana, John Hopkins University (JHU) and the international Decisions Support Initiative (iDSI) organized a pre-conference capacity building workshop on “Applied Health Economics Using Examples from Immunization”. This workshop was part of JHU’s teaching vaccine economics everywhere (TVEE) project. The platform for the workshop was deemed highly appropriate and supportive and the workshop itself was highly subscribed and successful. The success of the partnership for the workshop and the persistent demand to expand it culminated into two different related projects:

AfHEA prepares for next Conference

Discussion on the upcoming Sixth AfHEA Scientific Conference is underway. A decision was taken to shift the conference from 2021 to 2022 due to some factors including the impact of Covid-19 on meetings and conferences as well as the other key international events being planned for 2021, which could adversely affect the AfHEA conference.

AfHEA’s reconstitutes Board of Trustees

One of the key activities of AfHEA in the past year has been the re-constitution of the Board of Trustees as part of the transition plan that was adopted during the Rabat, Morocco conference in 2016. This activity involved wide consultations with key AfHEA constituents, members, development partners and donors. The process of re-constituting the Board, which started in the last quarter of 2019, climaxed with first meeting of the new Board, which was held virtually at the end of June 2020.

UNFPA collaborates with AfHEA on “UNFPA East and Southern Africa Regional undertaking of investment cases for Transformative Results in the Decade of Action”

Reference is made to UNFPA explorations with AfHEA during AfHEA’s 2019 scientific conference, on possible collaborations that can accelerate the integration of dimensions of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights into Universal Health Coverage - benefit packages, financing arrangements, including financial risk protection and client satisfaction.

Bill and Melinda Gates foundation supports AfHEA’s operational effectiveness and sustainability analysis

With funding and support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), AfHEA has been working closely with an external organization, Humentum https://www.humentum.org/ to assess the organizational effectiveness and sustainability of the association. This work is now drawing to a close. The draft report, which will be to the Board in the new year, identified AfHEA’s key strengths as well as areas requiring improvements, and made many recommendations to strengthen the association’s effectiveness and financial sustainability so as to position it for success in the rapidly evolving health landscape.
