The AfHEA secretariat is pleased to announce the successful completion of the Third African Health Economics and Policy Association conference in Nairobi.

We are excited to announce we have increased attendance (by around 15 percent compared to the 2011 conference, with about 260 attendees). A total of forty-two countries were represented compared to around 33 in 2011.

We held six high-level plenary sessions featuring a number of preeminent speakers that were extremely well received. We also had 36 parallel sessions (compared to 24 such sessions in previous conferences) of current vital research. As a result there was much interesting discussion and enlightened commentary.

Coming out of the conference, we were inspired by the increasing number of high-quality presentations by students, young researchers and emerging faculty. The future of health economics and health policy in Africa looks bright.

We were more than thrilled with the number of high-level policy people from Ministers (such as the Burundi Minister of Public Health and HIV/AIDS Fight, Dr. Sabine Ntakarutimana) in addition to ministerial staff who attended and added immensely to the rigour and practical value of the conference.

Finally, we coalesced around an emerging consensus on the concept of Universal Health Coverage.

AfHEA will be publishing the top 15 papers from the conference in an upcoming issue of the WHO African Health Monitor. Stay tuned.

In the near future we expect to have a detailed conference report and a consensus Nairobi Declaration on the continuing evolution of UHC and health research in Africa.
